Overland border crossings
As border crossings are real tailormade requirements we can not
give a standard itinerary, however we would like to give some information
on how to arrange this :
Entering and leaving Myanmar
The standard immigration rule in Myanmar is that one has to leave
the country the same way as one entered. Every deviation of this
rule needs a special permission from several ministries in Yangon.
Any licensed travel agent can arrange permissions for an overland
border crossing, provided that guests book a full package with this
agency. Therefore it is not possible to book only a border crossing.
As permission take time, we need to have a full
itinerary one month prior to arrival to Myanmar, as well as full
passport details, name, visa details etc.
The following 3 border checkpoints are open for
Muse / Ruli (Yunnan China)
Located north-east of Mandalay, the border town of Muse is an important
trading post. There is a fairly new highway from Mandalay to Muse,
however permission is needed for the road between Lashio and Muse.
It is possible to cross into China or from China into Myanmar. A
popular trip on arrival to Myanmar is to Bhamo and sail down the
Ayeyarwaddy river by public ferry to Mandalay.
Tachilek / Mae Sai (North Thailand)
Located in Eastern Shan State, Tachilek can be reached by air from
Heho and Kyaing Tong. The city of Tachilek can be visited from Mae
Sai on a day visa and one is then not allowed to travel outside
of city limits. Permission are given locally for visits to Kyaing
Tong, whereas a permission to travel onwards to Yangon and to exit
from Yangon has to be obtained in Yangon. Note that overland trips
are only possible from Tachilek to Kyaing Tong - it is not possible
to drive from Kyaing Tong to Taunggyi / Inle Lake.
Kawthaung / Ranong (South west Thailand)
This border town in the very south of Myanmar is a favorite checkpoint
for foreigners in Thailand who need to extend their Thai visa. However,
this town is very difficult to reach from Yangon and therefore we
are unable to provide services here. Note that the only airline
operating to this area is Myanmar Airways. Overland drives from
Kawthaung to Yangon are not possible.
Various diving trips are operated from Phuket and
Kawthaung to the Mergui Archipelago, however these are operated
on a port permit, which is not a valid visa to travel onwards to
