Union of Myanmar

Day 1 Yangon - Kyaiktiyo
Early morning, drive out of Yangon to the ancient capital of Bago (Pegu), about 2 hours drive northeast of Yangon. Visit Shwemawdaw Pagoda, which has a stupa, inlaid with diamonds and is Bago's golden landmark. See Shwethalyaung Buddha, which dates from 994 and is revered throughout Myanmar as the most beautiful Reclining Buddha. Just outside Bago, visit Kyaikpun Pagoda with four 30-meter high Buddha figures seated back to back. From Bago, drive to the small town of Kyaikto and on to the 'base camp' of Kinpun. Late Lunch at local restaurant in Kinpun. In the afternoon, take a truck up a bumpy track about half way up the mountain. From here, walk up the path which climbs steeply to the legendary 'Golden Rock'. (The climb takes around 1 hour and those unwilling, or not fit enough, to walk can hire four porters to carry them in a sedan chair). The climb offers magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and the opportunity to make friends with the many local people who make the pilgrimage to Kyaiktiyo. The incredible 'Golden Rock' sits precariously on top of the mountain, and is said to balance thanks to a precisely placed hair of Buddha. Weather permitting, sunset views from Mount Kyaiktiyo are amazing. Dinner at local restaurant or hotel. Accommodation at Kyaikto Hotel or The Golden Rock Hotel.
Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 Kyaiktiyo - Mawlamyaing
Breakfast. Early risers may enjoy returning to the Golden Rock; about 10 minutes walk from the Kyaikto Hotel or 60 minutes from the Golden Rock Hotel. After breakfast, walk down the mountain and return by truck to your car/minibus, or alternatively walk all the way down to the base camp at Kinpun (leaving very early morning if you choose to do this). Drive south towards Mawlamyaing (Moulmein), through seemingly endless rice fields. Lunch at a very local restaurant in Pa-An. In the afternoon, visit the Sa Dan Cave. This cave has a length of 2260 feet with many stalactites / stalagmites and a natural lake at the end of the cave. Also visit the Kaw Koon Cave where Buddha figures are carved out of the wall of the cave. Drive to Mawlamyaing, where you will arrive late afternoon. Dinner at Chinese Restaurant or Hotel. Accommodation at Mawlamyaing Hotel or similar.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 Mawlamyaing
Breakfast. Depart Mawlamyaing and drive south to Win Sein Toya, near Mudon, where the largest reclining Buddha in the world is under construction. Continue to Kyeik Ma Yaw to see a big sitting Buddha housed in a pagoda, and return to Mawlamyaing. Lunch at hotel or local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit Mawlamyaing's small museum (if open) and the local market. We will make photo stops at some interesting old colonial-style houses, a mosque and churches. Late afternoon, drive up into the nearby hills, which are home to many pagodas and monasteries. Visit Mahamuni Pagoda, built in typical Mon style, with covered walkways linking the various square shrine buildings. Visit the Yadana Bon Myint monastery with beautiful woodcarvings showing the previous life of Buddha. Visit also Kyaiktanlan Pagoda, the tallest in the city, and the nearby viewpoint to enjoy beautiful sunset views over the harbour and out across the River. Dinner at Phone Gyi Restaurant. Accommodation at Mawlamyaing Hotel or similar.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 Mawlamyaing - Yangon
Early breakfast. Return to Yangon by road. On the way, stop in Thaton which was once the center of a Mon kingdom that may have stretched as far east as Cambodia. You will visit Shwezayan Pagoda, home to a famous standing Buddha stele in the classic Mon style, with interesting stone carvings dating back to the 10th Century. Packed lunch or lunch at a local restaurant is included. (Alternatively, clients may choose to return to Yangon by train - see details below).

* A new road to the Golden Rock has been built and trucks now drive to the top of the mountain. Foreigners are not allowed to travel by truck higher than half way up because the road is very steep and dangerous.
* It can be very cold at night on the top of Mt Kyaiktiyo.
* The Kyaikto Hotel is of basic guesthouse standard - The water supply is erratic and, at times, the only available water for showering is in a bucket placed in each bathroom. Decorations are minimal and rooms have very thin walls. However, the location is freat.
* There is also the Golden Rock Hotel which is at least 60 minutes walk from the top of the mountain - The hotel has good local standards and is much more comfortable than the Kyaikto Hotel. However, the location is not as attractive as it is located at the foot of the mountain.
* This tour is not recommended during the rainy season from May to October. When it's wet, there are no trucks from Kinpun to the upper camp, and the mountain path is muddy and slippery. Many restaurants at Kyaiktiyo are closed during the rainy season.
* The road condition on the way to Mawlamyine is very bad and drives might be slow, uncomfortable and lengthy.
* Clients may choose to return to Yangon by train - the trip is slow (approximately 9 hours), dusty and not very comfortable. However, for those interested in seeing the "real Myanmar", train travel is most enjoyable. Vendors walk up and down the train selling all kinds of food at every station. (Basic) packed lunch is included. The supplement for returning by train is US$ 25 net per person, including private boat from your hotel to Mottama train station.
