5 Days / 4 Nights - Tour
Luang Prabang
Lao's People Democratic Republic

Day 1 Arrival - Luang Prabang
Late morning arrival in Luang Prabang. The ancient capital of the former Kingdom is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in South East Asia. Nestled in the mountains at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan Rivers the town has a unique charm with gilded temples on nearly every corner and saffron robed monks strolling through the quiet streets. The city center of this World Heritag Site has kept the flair of the bygone days and is rich in cultural heritage with old monasteries and temples. Transfer to your hotel and check-in. Lunch at local restaurant.

This afternoon we will visit Wat Wisunalat, one of the city's oldest temple, where we will also fine That Makmo, the so called Watermelon Stupa because of it's round dome. From there we will walk a few steps up to Wat Aham, which is known for it's two large Banayan Trees. Next we will walk up 350 steps to Wat Phousi Hill from where we have a nice view over the city and it's surroundings. The temples on the slopes of Phousi are all of rather recent construction located at the summit of the sacred hill. Late afternoon we will visit Wat Pha Baht Tai. The temple itself is not very spectacular but is located on the board of the Mekong and from the small terrace behind we can see the sun go down over the Mekong. Late afternoon return to your hotel. Dinner at local restaurant. Accommodation at Hotel, Luang Prabang.
Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 Luang Prabang
Breakfast. Today we will discover the oldest part of the city on foot. We will first stop at Wat Mai. It is build in traditional Luang Prabang style and has a remarkably rich decorated veranda. We will then visit the National Museum, which is located in the former king's palace in the center of Luang Prabang. On display is a lovely collection of personal artifacts of the Royal Family as photos, musical equipment and gifts received from foreign visitors. We will continue walking along the main road before turning left to visit Wat Nong. Opposite this temple is an Art School where over hundred students from all over Laos learn the ancient art of Lao workmanship. Further down the little road we will enter Wat Saen, a Thai style monastery with several wats. We will then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in one of the quiet side streets.

In the afternoon we will continue towards the end of the Penninsular and visit a few smaller temples: Wat Sop, Wat Sirimungkhun, Wat Si Bouan Heuang and Wat Khili. Almost at the end of the Penninsula we will then come to the richest and most beautiful temple: Vat Xieng Thong. The temple was build in classic Luang Prabang architecture in 1560. The rear wall of the Sim features an impressive "tree of life" mosaic set in red background. Inside richly decorated wooden column support a ceiling vested with Dharma-Wheels. In the compound stand several small chapels housing bronze Buddha images, which were displayed in Paris in 1911. Late afternoon we will strall along the Mekong and enjoy a refreshment in one of the simple riverside restaurants. Dinner at local restaurant. Accommodation at Hotel, Luang Prabang.

After we enjoyed this relaxing site we will visit a village of the Khmu minority close by. On the way back to Luang Prabang we will visit Ban Phanom Village which is well known for cotton and silk hand weaving. You can stroll through the village and watch the weavers working on their hand looms. We can also visit the tomb of Henri Muhout, the French explorer who re-discovered Angkor Wat in the 1860's.
