4 Days / 3 Nights - Tour
Luang Prabang
Lao's People Democratic Republic

Day 1 Arrival - Luang Prabang
Late morning arrival in Luang Prabang. The ancient capital of the former Kingdom is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in South East Asia. Nestled in the mountains at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan Rivers the town has a unique charm with gilded temples on nearly every corner and saffron robed monks strolling through the quiet streets. The city center of this World Heritag Site has kept the flair of the bygone days and is rich in cultural heritage with old monasteries and temples. Transfer to your hotel and check-in. Lunch at local restaurant.

This afternoon we will visit Wat Wisunalat, one of the city's oldest temple with That Makmo, the so called Watermelon Stupa because of it's round dome. From there we will walk a few steps up to Wat Aham, which is known for it's two large Banayan Trees. Next we will walk up 350 steps to Wat Phousi Hill. The temples on the slopes of Phousi are all of rather recent construction but from the top we have a very nice view over the city and it's surroundings. Late afternoon we will visit Wat Pha Baht Tai, a very pleasant place to see the sun go down over the Mekong River. Dinner at local restaurant. Accommodation at Hotel, Luang Prabang.
Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 Luang Prabang
Breakfast. This morning we will discover the oldest part of the city on foot. We will first visit Wat Nong. Opposite this temple is an Art School where students from all over Laos learn the ancient art of Lao workmanship. Further down the little road we will enter Wat Saen, a Thai style monastery with several wats. From there we will continue towards the end of the Penninsular and visit a few smaller temples: Wat Sop, Wat Sirimungkhun, Wat Si Bouan Heuang and Wat Khili. Almost at the end of the Penninsula we will find the richest and most beautiful temple: Vat Xieng Thong. The temple was build in classic Luang Prabang architecture in 1560. The rear wall of the Sim features an impressive "tree of life" mosaic set in red background. Inside richly decorated wooden column support a ceiling vested with Dharma-Wheels. In the compound stand several small chapels housing bronze Buddha images, which were displayed in Paris in 1911. Lunch at local restaurant.

This afternoon we will visit Khouang Si Waterfall which are about 30 km south of Luang Prabang. The pleasant drive through the countryside takes about 1 hour. The waterfall tumbles over multi-tiered limestone formations into cool, clear pools, which invite for a refreshing swim! After we enjoyed this relaxing site we will visit a village of the Khmu minority close by. On the way back to Luang Prabang we will visit Ban Phanom Village, which is well known for cotton and silk hand weaving. You can stroll through the village and watch the weavers working on their handlooms. Time permitting we will also visit the tomb of Henri Muhout, the French explorer who re-discovered Angkor Wat in the 1860's. It is located in the jungle outside the village on the banks of the river. Return to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon. Dinner at local restaurant. Accommodation at Hotel, Luang Prabang.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 Luang Prabang - Pak Ou
Breakfast. Today we will travel by traditional boat trip upstream on the Mekong river. During our trip we will see simple villages on the side of the river, fisherman in their little boats and many children playing in the water. We will travel for around 2 hours and will then visit the famous Pak Ou Caves, which are located at the confluence of the Mekong and the Nam Ou River. This are two caves in a limestone cliff facing the river jammed with Buddha Images of all style and sizes. The lower cave can easily seen by daylight, the upper cave is deeper and requires artificial light for viewing. On our trip back to Luang Prabang we will Ban Xanghai which is famous for its rice wine (lao lao) production. Time permitting we can walk through the beautiful countryside and visit some close by villages. Pick-nick lunch en route. Return to Luang Prabang in the afternoon. Accommodation at hotel, Luang Prabang.
